Woman airlifted to Cork hospital with head injuries following Limerick crash

A WOMAN passenger who was critically injured in a car that turned over on its roof after colliding with a wall and a pole in Co Limerick, last night, was transferred to Cork University Hospital with serious head injuries in the early hours of this morning.

The single-vehicle collision occurred at Lisnagry, Drominboy, on the Limerick-Newport Road, in east County Limerick around 8.30pm.

Emergency 999/112 receivers at the Munster Regional Communications Centre (MRCC) were alerted at 8:28pm that a car, believed to be a Mercedes, was upturned on its roof.

The MRCC mobilised firefighters attached to Limerick City, Killaloe in Co Clare, as well as Nenagh and Newport in Co Tipperary, to the scene.

HSE paramedics responded at the scene and Gardaí closed the stretch of road and put traffic diversions in place.

The man who was the driver of the car was seriously injured and is being treated at University Hospital Limerick.

The female passenger was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by fire crews using specialist cutting equipment before she was initially brought to UHL.

A statement released by the Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a car, which occurred on the R503 at Drominboy, Lisnagry, Co. Limerick, on Tuesday 30th July 2024 at approximately 8.40pm.”

“The male driver and female passenger of the car (both aged in their 20’s) were conveyed to Limerick University Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.”

“The scene is preserved for technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place.”

Appealing for wintesses, Gardaí asked that any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were traveling on the R503 road near Lisngry, Co. Limerick, Tuesday 30th July 2024, between 7.45pm and 8.45pm, “to make this footage available to Gardaí”.
