Former Deputy Mayor of Limerick laid to rest

The late Denis McCarthy, former Deputy Mayor of Limerick.

FORMER Deputy Mayor of Limerick Denis McCarthy was remembered this week following his passing after a brief illness.

A proud Corbally man, who originally hailed from Broadford, Mr McCarthy was first elected as a Fine Gael councillor in City East during the 2009 local election.

The father-of-three narrowly missed out on being the final Mayor of Limerick in 2013 before the Council’s merger the following year. He was pipped at the post to become the 817th Mayor of Limerick by Independent Kathleen Leddin.

He failed to hold onto his seat in 2014 when Limerick City Council and County Council merged after local elections.

The late former Deputy Mayor was remembered at City Hall this week as a “thorough gentleman”.

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney, paid tribute to his late Fine Gael colleague, saying that “it was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former City Councillor Denis McCarthy over the weekend”.

“Denis served the people of Corbally and the wider Limerick East area from 2009 to 2014,” Cllr McSweeney told the Limerick Post.

“Always a thorough gentleman, Denis represented the people of his area with great enthusiasm.”

“On behalf of myself and the elected members of Limerick City and County Council, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Donogh, Colum, Ann Marie, their mother Ann, his partner Marion, and the extended McCarthy family,” he said.

Prior to his election to Limerick City Council, Denis worked at the Department of Agriculture and had a great love of farming. A native of West Limerick, he was a constant visitor to his beloved Broadford.

Mr McCarthy passed away peacefully on Saturday last (July 27) at the intensive care unit in University Hospital Limerick.

He will be dearly missed by sons Donogh and Colum, daughter Ann Marie, partner Marion, daughters in law Jane and Kate, grandchildren Conor, Lucy, Liam, Sean, Aidan, Cathal, Darragh, and Aisling, former wife Ann, his nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.

He is predeceased by his five brothers, Cathal, PJ, Con, Jim and Jerry.

Denis was laid to rest on Tuesday in Springfield Cemetery, Broadford.
