15-TIME Major Winner Tiger Woods is a short-priced favourite to captain the USA in their highly-anticipated Ryder Cup showdown with Europe in three years’ time at Adare.
Woods was the fancy to skipper to the Stars and Stripes in Bethpage Black next year but that responsibility was surprisingly handed to 38-year-old Keegan Bradley. This was in part due to a busy work schedule for Woods.
He is now mooted for the role at the course of his close friend JP McManus, Martinstown.
Woods confirmed: “I’ll put my hat in the ring again when I have more time and I feel like I can devote myself to a Ryder Cup. As of right now, I’ve got so many different things I’m juggling and trying to get right at the same time for all the players that are a part of the PGA Tour.”
“It’s one of those things where you just can’t get it wrong.”
Over a great number of years, Woods and McManus have formed a strong friendship.
“I know it’s near and dear to his (JP) heart that he wants to be there for the event, and I hope he is there, obviously the conditions that he’s going through, and I hope he’s there, and I hope he’s healthy and happy,” commented Woods.
Another star familiar with Adare is the weekend Open winner Xander Schauffele (USA), who captured the top individual prize at the 2022 McManus Pro-Am at the county Limerick venue.
Ireland’s only staging of the coveted Ryder Cup was at the K-Club (Kilkenny) way back in 2006.
An open public meeting on Ryder Cup 2027 is due to be held in Adare Town Hall in August.
Its financial worth to Adare, and the wider mid-west region will run into hundreds of millions of euro.
