A MAN who admitted possessing and distributing hundreds of sexual images and videos of children has been remanded on continuing bail for sentencing at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court.
The man appeared before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court this past Thursday (July 25).
He has admitted to one count of “possession of child pornography, contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998 as amended by Section 14 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 2017”, as well as one count of “distributing child pornography, contrary to Section 5 (1)(b) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998 as amended by Section 12 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 2017”.
The man’s barrister informed the court that the defendant was a minor at the time he committed the criminal offences, and that reporting restrictions are in place.
Prosecuting counsel, John O’Sullivan BL, submitted to the court that any reporting restrictions might be lifted when sentencing is finalised, as the defendant is now an adult.
The man has admitted having a total of 226 images and 186 videos of a sexual nature involving children, in March 2020.
Mr O’Sullivan said the evidence in the case is of a “sensitive” nature.
Mr O’Sullivan said the facts of the case will be outlined in court when sentencing is finalised.
The court has ordered that the man be placed on a national sex offenders register.
A probation report has been sought by the court ahead of the final sentencing hearing, which is due to take place in October.
