ISTABRAQ – modern day jump racing’s most iconic star, owned by JP McManus of Martinstown – has passed away at the ripe old age of 32.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Charlie Swan, in the famed green and gold colours of South Liberties GAA, he won three Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham (1998-2000), having also won the old Royal Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle at Prestbury Park in 1997.

Of all his famous winners at Cheltehman, unquestionably Istabraq was loved by his owner.

Said McManus of the legendary Istabraq: “He was a very special horse who gave us many great days of fun and enjoyment.”

Following retirement in 2002, Istabraq spent his time in the lap of luxury at Martinstown, and even had just had celebrations for his 32nd birthday this past May.

“Our thanks to Lara Hegarty, Johnny O’Brien, and all the staff at Martinstown who took such fantastic care of him over many years. We are pleased that we gave him a good celebration for his most recent birthday in May. He leaves Noreen, myself, and the family with wonderful memories,” Mr McManus said.

Aside from the four wins at Cheltenham, Istabraq also captured as many Irish Champion Hurdles (Punchestown), an Aintree Hurdle, and two Hatton’s Grace Hurdles (Fairyhouse).

In all, O’Brien/Swan McManus combined to land14 Grade 1 successes with the great Istabraq.
