THE LIMERICK senior hurling panel are set to get a civic reception from Limerick City and County Council, after a vote was passed at a special meeting this week.

Despite dropping out of the All-Ireland race early, Limerick took home their sixth Munster title in a row and won five of the last seven All-Ireland Hurling titles.

Council priomh chomhairleoir Dan McSweeney called for a special meeting to vote on whether to give the Treaty men a civic reception – their second civic honour after their first All-Ireland win in 2018.

Cllr McSweeney said that the team’s achievements have been “nothing short of remarkable”.

“It is difficult now to believe that there was a 45-year drought before the Liam McCarthy Cup returned to Shannonside with that memorable win against Galway in 2018,” the Fine Gael man said.

“This team, under the expert guidance of John Kiely and his backroom team, have instilled an immense sense of pride across the county. Their hard work, drive, and unquenchable spirit continue to inspire.”

A civic reception is the second highest honour that can be bestowed upon Limerick people, behind only getting the Freedom of Limerick.

Cllr McSweeney said the “Limerick hurlers and management continue to show good sportsmanship,” and that while the five-in-a-row wasn’t to be this year, the team are sure to be back for more.

While Cllr McSweeney’s call for a civic reception was seconded by Independent councillor Eddie Ryan. It is not yet known when the event will take place.
