GARRYOWEN’S Conor Murray touched down for a brilliant opening half try for Ireland in a memorable 25-24 comeback win over South Africa at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, Durban, yesterday (Saturday).

The score helped the visitors into a 16-6 interval lead, with 11 points from the boot of Jack Crowley (he kicked 14 in total).

South Africa, the world champions, stormed back thereafter and appeared firmly on course for victory only for Ireland to snatch it with a last-gap winning drop goal from Ciarán Frawley.

In the aftermath, Murray told SuperSport: “Incredible just to come here to the world champion’s back yard and we knew how tough it would be. It was last week (in the first test) and it was again today.”

“South Africa don’t lose easy, they find a way (to stay in the game) and it’s so frustrating at times to play against. Look, we believed in ourselves and it was always going to be a big challenge.”

He added: “I think we can be really proud of last weekend’s heart, it was a tough defeat. But to turn up this week and we knew we were getting our break at the end of the week; the boys still fronted up and committed to this week.”

“We had a big meeting on Wednesday, it was a really honest meeting about ourselves. It wasn’t perfect tonight at all but we got over the line.”

Calvin Nash of Young Munster also played a leading role in the famous victory.

The outcome resulted in a 1-1 series draw.
