FOLLOWING Limerick’s shock defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland Hurling semi-final in Croke Park, Limerick City and County Council has praised the heroic Treaty men and said that they “did us proud”.

Limerick were defeated by Cork on a scoreline of 1-28 to 29 points in GAA headquarters on Sunday – in a classic, masterclass hurling display from all sides – putting a halt to the drive for five-in-a-row All-Ireland titles.

Reacting to the disappointing loss, Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) sent their “heartfelt commiserations to the Limerick Senior Hurlers, John Kiely, and his backroom team”.

“The team displayed remarkable spirit and dedication throughout the match, and while the result was not in our favour, their performance has made us all proud,” a council statement said.

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said that “we share the team’s disappointment but let’s not forget the immense joy we have shared thanks to their hard work and dedication over the years”.

“They have brought immense pride to Limerick, and we are grateful for their unwavering commitment and sportsmanship. They will no doubt be back. The team’s achievements have been amazing and we will celebrate that with a mayoral reception for them all when we get back to Shannonside.”

Director General of LCCC, Dr Pat Daly, said that “the Limerick Senior Hurlers have given us countless moments of joy and pride. Their passion for the sport and determination to succeed are truly inspiring.”

Cork will now face Clare in the All-Ireland hurling final on July 21 in Croke Park.
