A ROOM that was used as storage at a service in Limerick City has been transformed into a calm and safe space for women who are experiencing homelessness.

The transformation was unveiled this past week at McGarry House, run by homeless charity NOVAS in Limerick.

What was previously a storage area is now a serene and secure communal space specifically for women who experience homelessness in the city – many of whom are very vulnerable and have experienced great disadvantage throughout their lives.

This new female-only space is the first of its kind within the Limerick project and is much needed, according to the charity.

The transformation of the space was made possible through the generous donation of furniture and accessories by furniture retailer DFS. The project also benefited from the expertise of the creative Joanne Mooney, who was instrumental in ensuring the room’s design promotes a calming and feminine atmosphere.

Joanne, who has a following of 108,000 on Instagram, provided NOVAS with invaluable consultation on the project.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the refuge project, Joanne said “it’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of such a meaningful initiative”.

“Creating a safe, beautiful space where these women can feel at ease is so important. I hope this transformation brings them a sense of comfort and peace.”

NOVAS, who work supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness, identified the critical need for a dedicated area where their female clients can relax, make a cup of tea, or have a private conversation with their dedicated NOVAS worker.

The small communal space is situated in a newly refurbished wing that houses eight female bedrooms, aiming to create a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Una Deasy, NOVAS CEO, highlighted the significance of this project for the charity, saying that “this new communal space is a vital addition to McGarry House. It provides our female clients with a much-needed sanctuary.”

“Most women who experience homelessness have also experienced gender and domestic-based violence in their lives, so having a female-only space helps to foster safety and engagement and helps our clients to address their trauma in a supportive environment.

“We are immensely grateful to DFS, Joanne Mooney, and the other suppliers for their support and generosity. This makeover, though in a small space, has the potential to make a huge impact on the lives of these vulnerable women.”
