ST CLEMENTS’ College in Limerick City has announced the appointment of a new principal who will take up his position at the beginning of the new school year in September.
A native of County Tipperary, Michael O’Connor only is the third lay principal in the school’s 140-year history.
After graduating from Dublin City University with degrees in science and education, Mr O’Connor taught for some years in London before returning to Ireland to teach in Cistercian College, Roscrea, County Tipperary.
In 2010, he was appointed principal of St Michael’s College, Cappamore, until its amalgamation with two other schools to form Scoil Na Tríonóide Naofa in Doon, County Limerick (the first newly-built Catholic secondary school in Ireland in over 20 years at the time). In 2015, he was appointed principal of Coláiste Phobal Roscrea.
The only Redemptorist school in Ireland, with more than 400 pupils and a staff of over 60, St Clement’s College seeks to balance its academic achievement with a strong focus on inclusive pastoral care.
“I would like to say how delighted I am to accept the role of principal of St Clement’s College, and how much I am looking forward to working with the amazing staff and students we have in this great school,” Mr O’Connor says.
“The Redemptorists are renowned here in Limerick and worldwide for their commitment to social justice, equality, and to the good of all, and this is also the ethos of St Clement’s College.
“Our aim is to produce not just well educated but well-rounded young men. We are passionate about creating a welcoming environment rooted in Catholic values which draws the very best out of all in the school.”
Mr O’Connor will take up his role as principal on on September 1.
