E-biker arrested after seizure of loaded firearm in Limerick City

AN ELECTRIC bicycle rider was arrested in the King’s Island area of Limerick City in the early hours of this Friday morning after local Gardaí seized a loaded firearm the rider had been concealing in his bag.

The arrest was made by uniformed Gardaí who were out on a routine night time patrol in the city.

According to Gardaí, uniformed officers were on a routine patrol around midnight this Friday (June 28) when they “encountered a male on an electric bicycle on the Island Road in Limerick City”.

A Garda spokesman said that “upon observing Gardaí, the driver abandoned the electric bicycle and fled the scene on foot”.

“When this made was apprehended a short distance away, he attempted to discard a bag. When this bag was located, a loaded firearm was seized by Gardaí.”

The man, described by Gardaí as being in his 20s, was arrested at the scene and was being held in a Limerick City Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Gardaí have said that the firearm was to be sent to the Garda Ballistics Unit for analysis and that investigations are ongoing.
