LIMERICK Youth Service, the Garryowen Community Development Project, and the Garryowen Residents Association celebrated midsummer this year with the opening of the new Garryowen Community Garden.
Situated at the Kimurry Road in Garryowen, young people and families from the community and beyond came to enjoy a fun and information filled afternoon, with gardening demos and an opportunity to plant flowers and bulbs.
“The birth of the new Community Garden came about after conversations between young people and local community groups who were keen to develop a allotments,” said Robert McCartney of Limerick Youth Service (LYS).
“Many of the young people have an interest in gardening and horticulture and this was an exciting opportunity for them, their families and community to learn more about gardening, enjoy the outdoors and meet each other.”
Robert was keen to thank the young people, locals, and community groups for working together to create the Garryowen Community Garden.
“They’ve all been excellent, particularly the young people who have committed a great amount of the their free time to getting the project over the line,” he said.
The young people are members of the Irishtown hub of the LYS Youth Diversion Project and the Garryowen Youth Together Project.
The LYS Youth Diversion Project is co-funded by the government and the European Union.
