GREEN Party DEM candidate Brian Leddin has become the latest candidate to be ruled out of the race after count five at Limerick Racecourse this evening.

The sitting TD now says that he will take his passion for Limerick back to the Dáil and keep working for the improvement of the region.

Speaking to the Limerick Post after his elimination, Deputy Leddin said that “all of the political parties have had a very suppressed exposure in the mayoral election. And I think that’s a reflection of the the mayoral role.”

“I think around 50 per cent of first preference votes went to Independents, that wouldn’t be the case in a European or local or national election. But you do see in merit elections, right across the world, that’s what happens,” Deputy Leddin said.

“I’m going to keep going. And you know, I talked about this, my passion for what Limerick and the Mid West is to become in years and decades, I have a plan for this part of Ireland to become a counterweight to Dublin,” he said.

“In time, that has to happen. I’m going to continue working at that at the national level, just like I’ve been for the last four years.

“I really passionately believe that’s our potential. And I really hope that I’ll be working with a mayor of Limerick who has the very same vision and to work with that mayor together and just make sure that we plan to make it happen.”

The Green Party TD’s elimination comes on the back of his party returning only half the seats it held on the council in Limerick before yesterday’s local election results, going from two seats to one after Saša Novak Uí Chonchúir failed to retain her seat.
