AND THEY’RE off to the races at Limerick Racecourse this morning, politically speaking, as the boxes containing the Treaty votes have officially been opened by staff.
Limerick returning officer Vincent Murray – director of planning, environment, and place-making at Limerick City and County Council – gave staff and spectators alike a run through of the house rules and safety announcements, and boxes containing the local, mayoral, and European ballots were opened.
The European election ballot papers, which are to be counted in Cork from Monday morning, are to be transferred to the Rebel county by army personnel.
In Limerick, the count is being spread across a number of floors at Limerick Racecourse, with local and the inaugural mayoral count all happening in-house.
At present, count staff are currently sorting ballots before the official count is set to begin later today, estimated to begin at around 5pm.
Results for the local election are expected to be revealed across this evening and into Sunday night, before the count for the historic mayoral election begins on Monday morning – provided no recounts in the local elections take place.
