LIMERICK is a sporting heaven. So said Independent mayoral candidate Helen O’Donnell as the clock ticked down to Friday’s political rumble.
But it was a clash of a different kind that shares the top spot at the forefront of Helen’s mind – this Sunday’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final between Limerick and Clare.
As Limerick makes history with its maiden mayoral vote, the hurlers hope too for a history-making six Munster titles on the trot.
“We are living in truly great times when it comes to our hurling team, one which has bonded city and county,” she said.
Ms O’Donnell views herself as a community candidate “who will work diligently over the next five years with every community across a county and city I care for passionately”.
At the heart of her policies are town and village renewal, along with the creation of a City Centre Task Force and a Housing Accelerator Unit, which she says will urgently address the serious lack of housing in Limerick.
“Also, infrastructure to advance housing projects will be worked on immediately, in terms of roads, water, sewage systems, and the like,” she said.
“Limerick is home to us all, and let us create a lovely Limerick that we can all be proud of.”
As a founding member of Team Limerick Clean-Up, Ms O’Donnell says she was litter conscious in not running a poster campaign, instead opting for a select number of billboards, all erected without cable ties across the county.
