Intoxication checkpoints halved in Limerick as EU candidate calls for alcohol interlocks

Fianna Fáil candidate for Ireland South in the upcoming European elections Cynthia Ní Mhurchú

GARDA intoxication testing checkpoints were down 49 per cent in Limerick between 2022 and 2023.

That’s according to EU elections candidate for Ireland South, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who described the figures as “shocking”.

In light of the statistic, Ms Ní Mhurchú has called for the introduction of ‘alcohol interlocks’, devices that temporarily prevent the ignition of vehicles belonging to repeat drink and drug driving offenders until they blow into a breathalyser test mounted in the vehicle.

“At a time when road deaths are out of control, it is really important that we see a Garda presence on our roads,” she added.
