ONE of the best known retailers of religious goods in Limerick City, and throughout the country, has closed its doors for the last time.

Veritas has closed at its prime retail space on Limerick City’s O’Connell Street.

Earlier this year, the company announced it was to wind down its business operations and that it was closing all of its shops.

The Limerick store closed finally last week on the May 15.

Considered on of Ireland’s oldest brands, Veritas was founded in 1899 to publish religious books, pamphlets, and materials for the market in Ireland.

It opened its first store on Lower Abbey Street in Dublin in 1928.

The company employs around 80 people across its publishing, education, and retail outlets.

The decision to cease operations, Veritas said, followed a “comprehensive strategic review of the business which determined that the alternative of a restructuring process would not mitigate the challenges that exist or sufficiently improve the commercial prospects of the business”.

The Veritas Limerick store was opened in September 2022 by Bishop Brendan Leahy.
