Limerick Soc Dems candidate says childcare is a driver of many crises

Social Democrats candidate for the local elections Donnah Vuma.

SOCIAL Democrats local election candidate for City East, Donnah Vuma, is calling for an urgent addressing of the childcare crisis in Limerick.

The mother of four says that a lack of childcare options is at the heart of a number of crises facing Limerick.

“As a parent, I understand first-hand the challenges that many families in our community face with childcare,” she said.

“I’m hearing story after story from residents who, like myself, have been on waiting lists for years, grappling with the impossible choice between a much-needed job and caring for their children.”

“The crisis in UHL is due to the lack of staff – how can we attract and keep vital staff when we have no child care facilities?” she asked

“Lack of childcare is a barrier to economic stability and social equity for families right across our city. It’s time for us to prioritise childcare as a fundamental need, not a luxury.”

Ms Vuma also declared a planning gap in housing developments, leaving not enough childcare spaces provided for in facilities.

“We must change how this is done and start championing childcare as a cornerstone of community development. By integrating childcare facilities into public spaces, we can make them local, accessible and inclusive for all families.

“Our voices matter. I will tirelessly advocate for improved childcare policies and funding if elected. Every child deserves quality care. Every parent needs to know their child is safe and happy while they are at work,” she concluded.
