LABOUR Party councillor Joe Leddin has called for a guarantee of paid leave for workers attending cancer screenings.

The Limerick City West representative was speaking following the publication of Labour’s Health Screening Leave Bill.

“We cannot underestimate the importance of early detection in the battle against cancer. It’s a fight that affects every family in Limerick. We know screening is a vital tool in identifying potential risks at the earliest stages, giving individuals the best chance at successful treatment and recovery,” Cllr Leddin said.

“There’s no statutory leave for workers to attend health screening appointments for cervical, breast, or colon cancer. Labour’s Bill seeks to rectify this by providing necessary support for workers to prioritise their health without facing financial hardship or job insecurity.

“Workers with inflexible employers or those in precarious working arrangements are forced to navigate between holiday entitlements or sick leave just to attend a health screening appointment. This cannot continue and we need action. Labour’s Bill ensures that workers – regardless of age, gender, or employment status – can access paid leave for screenings.”

He went on to say that while the necessity for leave to attend health screenings may not arise frequently, its impact is profound.

“One missed appointment could mean the difference between early intervention and a devastating diagnosis,” he said.

“Where the fight against cancer hits close to home for many families, the Health Screening Leave Bill is a crucial step towards ensuring that no one faces unnecessary barriers to accessing vital health services.”
