GARDAÍ are investigating the circumstances of two men seen carrying large knives in the heart of Limerick City after video footage of the pair was shared online.

Video footage was shared on social media of two males in possession of what appeared to be large knives as they walked among a crowd of young people on O’Connell Street.

A Garda spokesman said that “Gardaí received report of an incident that occurred on the evening of the 26th of April 2024 on O’Connell Street, Limerick City” and that these Garda “enquiries are ongoing at this time”.

In a general warning about the dangers of carrying knives, Garda Sergeant Ber Leetch, crime prevention officer at Henry Street Garda Station, said: “Some young men believe that carrying a knife could protect them, but the opposite is true, frequently the knife is taken from them and used on them.”

“Even a small knife can cause a dangerous wound,” she said.

Sergeant Leetch also warned that carrying a knife is a criminal offence, even if one does not use it.

“Carrying a knife can put you in jail, you do not have to injure somebody, simply being found in possession of a knife is a crime that you could be arrested for.”
