FINE Gael local election candidate for City North, Richard Delaney, has hit out at that Limerick roads have deteriorated significantly over the winter months.
The North Circular Road, the Limerick driving instructor maintains, is no exception, telling the Limerick Post that the fabric of the road tarmac is now collapsing on St James’s Court.
“This is a health and safety hazard on what is a very busy section of road for all users in the area,” he says.
“Representations have been made to have the road repaired and potholes have been filled. However, I believe that the road itself needs to be completely redone as it has been neglected over the last five years and now is the time, before a serious incident occurs.”
He went on to say that he has “witnessed the gridlock that is occurring” at the junctions where the road meets Fernbank and Lower Shelbourne Road.
Another concern in the area, Mr Delaney pointed out, is at Villiers Secondary School during school collection time.
”Buses have to park on the main road outside the school as they have no allocated parking bays. Parents are also having to park on the main road to collect their children and then they have to try to navigate around these buses on what is a very narrow road. ”
Mr Delaney says that while there have been no accidents, the road “falls well below health and safety standards and is untenable and unacceptable for those attending the school and also for local residents”, further claiming that many locals find it difficult to leave or enter their homes during school run times.
“I firmly believe that if the school, residents, and Limerick City and County Council met, a solution could be found to accommodate all,” he concluded.
