Limerick senator calls for special VAT rate for hospitality businesses

Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne.

A SPECIAL VAT rate is needed to help hospitality businesses survive, according to Limerick Fine Gael senator Maria Byrne.

Speaking following a Limerick meeting with local businesses and Minister for Enterprise Simon Coveney, Senator Byrne said that smaller hospitality businesses are being treated the same as large corporations when it comes to VAT and it is putting extra pressure on them.

“I believe it is time government reconsidered a lower VAT rate for smaller businesses like pubs and restaurants who are struggling to keep their doors open, while larger businesses who are more equipped to handle the costs would continue to pay the 13.5 per cent VAT rate,” Senator Byrne said.

A “tailored” VAT rate could help support many local businesses, she suggested.
