COUNTY Limerick politician Richard O’Donoghue believes that Simon Harris’s appointment as Taoiseach symbolises a mere “rearrangement of the deck chairs on the Titanic”.
The Independent Ireland TD, who voted against Mr Harris being named Taoiseach, wished the new Fine Gael leader well in his position.
“Mr Harris’ appointment as Taoiseach symbolises a mere rearrangement of the deck chairs on the Titanic,” he said in the Dáil.
“To be clear, Simon Harris and a handful of new Fine Gael Ministers bring no novelty or change to the current Fine Gael or government policy.”
Deputy O’Donoghue continued that “once upon a time, Fine Gael was known as the farmers’ party and Fianna Fáil was known as the workers’ party. That is no more. It is very shocking for people who were members of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to see the way those parties have gone since they joined the Green Party in government, and that they have forgotten the people who put them there in the first place.”
According to the Independent Ireland TD, this government’s legacy will be imposing higher taxes and disregarding the voices of ordinary people and rural communities.
