Park and Ride urgently needed for Raheen, says Limerick councillor

Limerick Labour Party councillor Joe Leddin.

CITY West representative Joe Leddin has called for the fast tracking of a site identified beside Raheen industrial estate for a Park and Ride facility.

According to the Labour councillor, residents are living a daily nightmare with cars being parked in their estates creating hazards and dangerous driving conditions.

“In many cases, cars are being parked at the corners within housing estates causing blind spots, near misses, and minor crashes at times,” he told the Limerick Post.

“Delivery vehicles and waste collection companies are now frequently blocked from driving into estates, an issue also being experienced by residents in estates beside the third level colleges in the city.

“The reality is there are more and more people driving and we have to offer alternative sustainable modes of transport and facilities that will enable people to park safely without negatively impacting on the lives of residents within estates.”

Many of those parking their cars in the estates, Cllr Leddin suggests, are workers from University Hospital Limerick who are unable to find sufficient parking in staff lots at the hospital.

“The Park and Ride site located adjacent to the Raheen Industrial Estate, if delivered, could facilitate several hundred cars with a five-minute bus frequency into the city with various stops en route,” he said.

“Residents cannot wait any longer as the situation is deteriorating on a daily basis. I am asking the National Transport Authority to prioritise the development of the Raheen Park and Ride as an immediate infrastructure priority.”
