New candidate comes forward in West Limerick for local elections

Jimmy Barrett will contest the general election in Limerick County.

NEWCASTLE West resident and Irish Rail employee, Jimmy Barrett, has announced his plans to chug it out in the upcoming local elections as an Independent Ireland candidate.

Mr Barrett has spent the past 25 years working for the national rail transport, where he has held various roles including maintenance fitter, team leader, supervisor, and his current position as a competency assessor.

In addition to his full-time role, Mr Barrett is the owner of Pedal Pursuits bike hire, which he established in 2011 to provide bike hire services for customers using the Great Southern Limerick Greenway. He says the company has been instrumental in promoting tourism in the area and enhancing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

A resident of Newcastle West, Mr Barrett says he is deeply rooted in the local community. He resides with his partner Susan, who has served as a civil servant for the past 20 years, and their two children, Caitlin and Jodie, who attend Killoughteen National School.

Reflecting on his decision to enter the race as an Independent candidate, Mr Barrett emphasised his commitment to fighting for fairness and accountability in local governance.

“I have personally experienced the challenges of dealing with local authorities and elected representatives who have failed to represent the interests of their constituents,” he stated.

“I am determined to stand up for what is right and fair for myself, my family, and the people of Newcastle West and surrounding areas.”

Richard O’Donoghue, a founding member of Independent Ireland, expressed his support for Mr Barrett, saying that his “dedication to his community and his commitment to integrity and accountability make him an exemplary candidate for Newcastle West.”
