AN ELDERLY woman was arrested in connection with a haul of almost half a million euro in cannabis at Shannon Airport, according to Gardaí.
The arrest and subsequent seizure came as the result of a risk profiling operation carried out by Revenue officers at Shannon Airport on Sunday (April 7).
According to a statement from Revenue, officers sized 23 kilogrammes of herbal cannabis and 3.3 kilogrammes of cannabis resin after searching the baggage of a passenger who had disembarked a flight from Faro in Portugal.
Officers found the drugs in the passenger’s luggage.
Gardaí claim that the cannabis seized has a value of €480,000.
A woman in her 60s was arrested by Gardaí after the seizure and detained under the 1996 Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act at a Garda station in County Clare.
The seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups in the importation, sale, and supply of drugs.
A spokesman for Revenue called on businesses or members of the public who may have any information regarding drug smuggling to come forward in confidence on 1800 295 295.
Gardaí say investigations into the massive cannabis seizure are ongoing.
