Limerick councillor calls for Palestinian flag to be flown at City Hall

Labour Party Councillor Conor Sheehan

LABOUR councillor Conor Sheehan has called for the Palestinian Flag to be flown at City Hall as an act of solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Cllr Sheehan was speaking after a motion he placed on the agenda of this week’s local authority meeting was referred to the local authorities protocol committee.

“The death toll in Gaza following Israel’s campaign of genocide now stands at 32,783 most of whom are women and children and with Gaza now on the brink of famine, we see Israel using famine as a weapon of war,” Cllr Sheehan told the Limerick Post.

“This slaughter must stop now. We reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire and for the release of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Limerick City and County Council should fly the Palestinian Flag to express our solidarity with the people of Gaza and to express our revulsion at this campaign of ethnic cleansing.

“As a country, I sincerely hope that the new Government will move to recognise the State of Palestine without delay and finally pass the Occupied Territories Bill which would ban the import of good from illegal settlements. Ireland is a world leader in standing up for Palestinian rights but we can and must do more.

“I am calling on the protocol committee to make the right decision and fly the flag above city hall, there is precedence for this, it has been done in other cities such as Dublin and we should so the same in Limerick.”
