THE OWNERS of a fast food outlet on the outskirts of Limerick City have signalled their intention to apply to the council for planning permission to extend the outlet.

Watchford Ltd, owners of the Hungry Lyons outlets in Dooradoyle and the Ennis Road, are to apply to Limerick City and County Council for permission to construct a single storey extension to their existing takeaway outlet in Dooradoyle.

The outlet at the Dooradoyle Centre on St Nessan’s Road is owned by Watchford Ltd, whose directors include John Lyons and his wife, Mary, and currently houses the Hungry Lyons, Subway, and Happy Dough Lucky.

The planning notice that appeared in local media states that the company plans to construct a single-story extension to existing takeaway restaurant “incorporating additional kitchen/servery, public seating area, and associated site works”.

It is not clear which takeaway outlet would benefit from the granting of planning permission, and Watchford Ltd did not respond for comment at time of going to press.

This comes just months after Watchford Ltd was among objectors to plans by Maxol to extend its branch on St Nessan’s Road to include a drive-through food outlet.

In their objection, agents for Watchford Ltd said that a drive-through at Maxol’s Dooradoyle outlet would not support the growth of Limerick City and that “there is sufficient provision of restaurants and takeaways in the immediate area”, adding that it would “strongly object to permission being granted [for] another takeaway restaurant and drive thru”.

In October 2023, Limerick City and County Council planners granted Maxol permission to alter the existing single-storey service station building, and the construction of a new extension, but ruled that the drive-through food outlet be omitted “in the interest of proper planning and sustainable development”.
