LIMERICK City and County Council has issued just one dog control fine since 2020.

Figures recently published by the Irish Independent show that only one fine was handed out in the Treaty county between 2020 and 2023.

Such fines can only be issued when an offence is witnessed by a dog warden or a statement is given by a member of the public.

According to the Irish Independent, many local authorities cite lack of resources as a reason why so few fines were issued.

Dublin City Council had issued the highest number of fines with 105, while four other councils (Tipperary, Donegal, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, and Monaghan) had only issued one. Clare, Longford, Westmeath, and Cavan had all issued zero fines between 2020 and 2023.
