REVENUE officers seized 26,000 cigarettes bound for the black market in a County Limerick port last month.
The seizure was the result of “an intelligence-led operation” by Revenue officers based at Shannon Airport during the search of a ship docked at Foynes Port in County Limerick.
The customs and excise body said the ‘L&M’ branded cigarettes had a retail value of €20,000 and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €16,000.
The seizure was part of a sweep along the west coast in which €20,000 worth of herbal cannabis was seized in Shannon Airport, while 23,400 cigarettes and six kilogrammes of tobacco were found in Cork Airport.
