THE Limerick Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous will take place at the Castletroy Park Hotel from February 2 to 4. Opening public meetings will take place on the Friday at 8.30pm and Saturday at noon.
People already in recovery will attend and people considering recovery or in need of information are also welcome to the open meetings, organisers say. They can also access literature and information any time on Friday or Saturday at the venue.
There are now more than 20 different groups in the Limerick City area and another 20 in the county, with meetings every day, 365 days a year.
With AA celebrating 70 years in Ireland, one of the association’s first meetings outside of Dublin was in Limerick in 1948.
The purpose of the weekend convention is to carry the message of recovery to those who are members and to those who still suffer.
It also gives members of the fellowship an opportunity to share their combined experiences, to renew old acquaintance, and to make new ones.
The theme of this 42nd convention is ‘We are Not Alone’ and there will be closed ‘marathon meetings’ on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday.
Al-Anon, the support organisation for family and people affected by another person’s drinking, will also be part of the convention.
Registration for the conference is €10 and there will be music and entertainment on Saturday night from 10pm until late at a cost of €5.
