Rejoicing in St Mary’s Church as Elizabeth cuts 101st birthday cake

Elizabeth Lyons shared her 101st birthday cake with friends and family at St Mary's Church.

101-YEAR-OLD Elizabeth Lyons had her “let them eat cake” moment last week when parishioners at St Mary’s parish church joined the Limerick centenarian in joyous birthday celebrations.

Ms Lyons, well known and widely admired in her parish, was also the centre of celebrations recently when she switched on the Christmas lights at St Mary’s Church.

She was met with thanks and praise by those attending mass at St Mary’s Church when she cut her 101st birthday cake in front of the altar.

Following communion, the Limerick great-great-grandmother cut slices of cake for friends and family who applauded the centenarian for her ongoing work in fostering a Christian spirit in her local community.

Ms Lyons told the Limerick Post that she was “over the moon” after she was the guest of honour for the second year running in the parish to switch on the church’s Christmas tree lights in December.
