THE Limerick Historical Society (LHS) will host its first meeting of 2024 this coming Tuesday (January 16), which will focus on 1882 the death by hanging of Francis Hynes.
Pat McNamara will tell the story of Francis ‘Francie’ Hynes, a man sentenced to hanging after a deathbed accusation from farm worker John Doloughty, who was ambushed and shot on the roadside outside Ennis in July 1882.
More than 1,000 people attended the hanging on September 11, 1882, in Limerick Prison by executioner William Marwood.
Many presume Hynes to be an innocent party in the killing.
The society meeting will take place from 8pm at the Methodist Church on O’Connell Street.
