THE cold snap causing chills across Limerick is set to continue throughout the week, with ground temperatures expected to fall to as low as -6 degrees Celsuis in parts of the county tonight (Monday January 8).

According to a cold weather advisory statement issued by Met Éireann, Limerick and the rest of Ireland can expect the cold snap to last until at least Friday night (January 12), with severe frost, icy patches, and dense fog leading to hazardous road conditions.

A status yellow low temperature and ice warning is currently in place for all of Limerick, which is expected to be lifted tomorrow morning (Tuesday January 9) by 10am. Met Éireann has warned of cold and icy conditions across the county, with warnings of black ice on roads having been made in nearby counties.

Limerick City and County Council has confirmed it will be treating roads across the county this evening to help combat the expected -4 to -6 degree ground temperatures.

“Limerick’s fleet of road treatment vehicles will begin treating roads covered under the Limerick Winter Maintenance Plan at 4pm today and again at 4am on Tuesday morning,” a spokesman for the council said.

“These roads were also treated at 7pm on Sunday and again at 4am this morning.”

The council spokesman said that the road treatment is concentrated primarily on the National Road Network and strategic regional roads categorised as Priority 1.

“This is not a guarantee that roads, including motorways and national routes, will be entirely clear of ice at all times as ice can occur on roads at any time and any place not predicted in forecasts,” the council spokesman said.

Road users are advised to exercise extreme caution on roads in untreated areas.
