MAYOR of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell, helped to distribute over 300 Christmas hampers to Limerick families during the festive season this year.
The families applied through the Mayor’s Fund initiative and have collected their hampers, which were stocked with quality local produce.
“In the spirit of community and compassion, I am delighted that the Mayor’s Fund could provide over 300 Christmas hampers to Limerick families this holiday season. Our focus on supporting local businesses and minimising environmental impacts reflects our commitment to building a stronger, more resilient community,” Mayor Mitchell said.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Limerick businesses that generously funded this initiative, and any surplus funds will go towards supporting local charities. Together, we can make a positive impact and spread joy during this festive season.”
Traditionally this was the Mayor’s ‘coal donation’, but in recent years it was decided that hampers of local produce would help to support small local businesses with minimal impact on the environment.
The hampers were obtained from the NeighbourFood Unit at Limerick Milk Market and the Urban Co-op.
The Christmas hampers were part-funded again this year by Limerick businesses with any remaining funds to be distributed to local charities.
