Council to look at alternative parking arrangements for Newcastle West

FINE Gael councillor Tom Ruddle has quizzed the Council on the steps it is taking to provide parking in Newcastle West.

At this month’s local area meeting, Cllr Ruddle pointed out that the West Limerick town has recently lost 25 car park spaces at Aldi.

“Going from 105 spaces from what they got in the original planning permission, this is reduced down to about 80,” he hit out.

Cllr Ruddle, Cathaoirleach of the Newcastle West Municipal District, said that parking has also been lost in other parts of county’s premier town. The new draft public realm plans, he continued, also shows a reduction of car parking in the Square.

“It is incumbent on the Council to provide adequate parking within walking distance of the town centre.”

In response, senior executive engineer John Sheehan said that in conjunction with the public realm plan, Limerick City and County Council can look at alternative parking arrangements and consider options available to them.

“The Municipal District office will be working with the local community groups and businesses in cooperation with the Economic Development Department over the coming months on developing a public realm plan for the town,” Mr Sheehan concluded.
