IT WAS a close call when a man prevented his neighbour’s house from being broken into recently by disturbing would-be thieves while they were in the act.

The man, who lives in the Colemanswell area, went outside to lock his front gate on Thursday (November 30) at around 8.50pm, Limerick Gardaí have reported.

The man saw three men run down the road from the direction of his neighbour’s house. Knowing they weren’t home, the man called his neighbour straight away to let them know what had happened.

When the neighbour returned, they could clearly see that the men had tried to force open the front window of the house to gain entry.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station, said that, by being a good neighbour, the man had prevented the house from being broken into, and that one should always light up their home when they’re going to be away after dark.

“Light up your home if you are going out after dark and be a good neighbour, keep an eye on each other’s property,” she said.

Sgt Leetch also said “call 999 if you are a victim of a crime or a witness to a crime”.
