LIMERICK animal lovers are being asked to consider giving some ex-working chicks a home this Christmas, with the LittleHill Animal Rescue and Sanctuary coming to the Treaty City to deliver chickens rescued from death row.
LittleHill Animal Rescue and Sanctuary will be in Limerick, Shannon, and surrounding areas this Saturday (December 16) on a Christmas Chicken Run to bring ex-battery hens to people willing to give them a new home.
The little ladies are running out of time to be rescued as the sanctuary has been told they only have a couple of days left before the hens have to go.
The chickens were rescued from factories where they were kept for egg production and, while they are still young enough to provide plenty of eggs, they can’t do so on a commercial scale after their first year or two and are sent for slaughter.
LittleHill, and those who offer homes, give a second chance in life for the many that do manage to survive.
People who want to adopt can check the LittleHill website or Facebook page and offers of adoption should be made by private message to the sanctuary, so that arrangements about time and place of collection can be made.
If there are not enough offers of homes, the volunteers may have to cancel the run, which also extends into counties Clare and Nenagh.
Anyone considering adoptions at a future date can also contact the sanctuary, which is based in Kildare, where chickens and roosters can be collected by arrangement or check the group’s Facebook page for future chicken run dates.
