At whopping odds of 40/1, Cafe Con Leche landed the two-mile one-furlong handicap hurdle at Cork for Ballingarry trainer Charles Byrnes and amateur rider Anthony Bustin, who also owns the winning seven-year-old.
It was a second winner for Bustin who has previously partnered Killoughteen, another in his own colours, to success at Wexford in September of 2022.
This time, he had a little in hand in beating the Tim Doyle-trained 3/1 chance Ricky Bobby by a length and a half.
โIโm delighted for Anthony who works for me and he claimed the horse,โ Byrnes told irishracing.com. โI recommended him for โฌ10,000 as he was looking for a horse to ride and I thought this fella would give him plenty of fun.โ
He added: โHe is a quirky horse who can take off after jumping the last and I’m delighted for Anthony. I don’t think anyone had too much money on but it doesn’t matter.โ
Said Bustin: โI ride out in Charlesโ every day and I break horses in the evening.
โIโve always been into horses and my father David was a good rider but probably gave up prematurely. He rode professionally and was stable jockey to Michael Hourigan at the start.
โI gave up riding and did a college course but being indoors wasn’t very good for me!
โI had another mare who won a maiden hurdle at Wexford (in 2021) and she is in foal now. All my family were there that day and they’re here today as well, so it is brilliant.โ
