CONSTRUCTION is to begin on Active Travel infrastructure along the Mill Road in Corbally later this month.
The project will consist of an off-road shared pedestrian/cycle facility from the junction of Corbally Road to the River Shannon viewing area.
Approximately 1.4km in length, the scheme will include traffic calming measures such as raised pedestrian crossings.
The works, anticipated to run from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and on occasional Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, are to begin in the coming weeks and expected to take 19 months to complete.
A traffic management system will be in place for the duration of the works. This may include temporary traffic lights and flagmen and will be subject to the specific requirements of the works area.
“The Mill Road is seen as a key connector to primary and secondary Active Travel routes in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy, which sets out the framework for local transport policy. It is going to be a really important piece of infrastructure for those living in the area and it is exciting to see it going to construction,” Senior Engineer with the Active Travel team, Sean McGlynn commented.
“This project will ultimately allow people living in the vicinity of the Mill Road to walk or cycle to school or work in a safer manner when it’s completed.
“We appreciate the patience required of local residents in the next number of months and their co-operation. In the long term, the Scheme will be a key connector and deliver significant benefits to the area, in tandem with the Corbally Road Safe Routes To School Scheme, which recently received planning permission.”
The project received an allocation of €800,000 in funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) in 2023, having been allocated just over €1million in 2022.
