IT was a very big and special occasion for the Parish of Patrickswell last weekend as the first Community Council event took place in the new €1.5million Patrickswell Community Centre.
Contractors moved in onsite in August 2022 to commence construction on the village’s much-needed centre after years of hard work by many community volunteers.
The construction took 14 months to complete by Parkway Construction and a design team led by architect Rob Shanahan, Cathal Keane of CuddyQS, and David O’Malley of Hutch O’Malley Consulting Engineers.
Patrickswell Community Council secured significant grant funding from a number of sources to deliver the community centre, including €250,000 from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund, €500,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development, €500,000 from Limerick City and County Council, and the remainder of the funding from the community.
“This is truly an historic day for the village and all who live within it. Over many years our volunteers have worked tirelessly to deliver a Community Centre for the Well,” said Vice Chairperson of Patrickswell Community Council Mike Ahern.
Local Fine Gael councillor and Deputy Mayor, Dan McSweeney, welcomed the opening of the community centre.
“Over the last four years, I have had the privilege of working alongside a truly amazing group of volunteers who never gave up on their dream of delivering a state-of-the-art community centre for Patrickswell,” Deputy Mayor McSweeney commented.
“As we have seen in recent days, the centre will become the focal point of our village. I look forward to continuing to work with Patrickswell Community Council and to deliver for Patrickswell.”
