GARDAÍ in Limerick have appealed for information following a fatal hit and run collision in which a male pedestrian was killed overnight.
And the fatal incident is now also under scrutiny as it is alleged there was interaction between Gardai and one of two cars involved.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at Dublin Road, Castletroy, shortly after 9.50pm last night.
A Garda spokeswoman said the fatal collision involved two cars and a pedestrian, and that “the driver of one car failed to remain at the scene”.
“The male pedestrian was removed to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced deceased,” she stated.
“The male driver (40’s) and the female adult passenger of the second car were removed to University hospital Limerick, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.”
As the vehicle allegedly involved in the fatal collision was also allegedly subject to an interaction with the Gardai prior to the hit and run, the matter has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), as is required by law.
A GSOC spokeswoman said: “GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána during the early hours of Saturday, 14 October, following a road traffic incident in the Annacotty area of Co. Limerick.”
“The referral was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.”
“The matter is now under examination by GSOC and no further comment will be made at this time,” the GSOC spokeswoman concluded.
The scene was still being preserved Saturday morning to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination.
The Dublin Road, from the junction of the Groody Roundabout, through to the junction of the Golf Links Road, remains closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.
Appealing for witnesses, the Garda spokeswoman stated: “Any road users who were travelling in the area of Dublin Road, Castletroy, Limerick on Friday 13th October, between 9pm and 10pm, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), are asked to make this available to Gardaí.”
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
