A LOCAL councillor recently questioned if the fire service can support in the rescue of large animals in Limerick.
Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan asked at this month’s full meeting of the local authority if Limerick Fire Services can attend and support in the rescue of large animals in Limerick.
In response, Council Director for National and Regional Shared Services Kieran Lehane explained that dealing with large animals is a very specialist activity requiring expert training and equipment.
“The training is not available in Ireland and Limerick Fire Service has no staff trained in this area,” he informed Cllr O’Donovan.
“In the interest of safety, health, and welfare of fire personnel, Limerick Fire Services do not attend or support the rescue of large animals in Limerick.”
