FINE Gael has announced its three candidates to run in Limerick City East in next year’s local elections.

Cllr Sarah Kiely, who was elected Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District the year after first taking a Council seat in 2019, was named as one of the three runners for the ward, which stretches from Hyde Road to Castletroy and out to Castleconnell.

Cllr Kiely was nominated as a “super host” by the Irish Hospice Foundation for her continued support to Milford Hospice. She has also worked with Down Syndrome Limerick on their abseil fundraising campaign.

Also seeking re-election in 2024 is Cllr Michael Murphy, a longtime member of the Castleconnell/Ahane/Montpelier Fine Gael branch. Currently working as a programme facilitator with Rehab Care, Cllr Murphy is active in several community organisations including Ahane GAA, Newport Day Centre, Mulcair Men’s Shed, and Castleconnell Historical Society.

Joining the City East team is first-timer Peter Doyle from Castletroy, a former president of Old Crescent RFC and former treasurer of Aisling Annacotty AFC. A qualified management accountant, Michael is the managing director of Key Ingredients Limerick in Annacotty Park.

If elected, Mr Doyle says his priorities include better planning in Limerick and a focus on the restoration of the city centre as both a shopping and living place.
