EVA International: artistic encounters across 17 diverse locations

Frank McSweeney installation at Hanging Gardens

EVA International, Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art, is currently ongoing in Limerick city and its surroundings until Sunday, October 29.

This dynamic program encompasses artistic encounters, exhibitions, and educational projects, occurring every two years across 17 diverse locations within Limerick city and the University of Limerick campus.

It features over 50 presentations by both Irish and international artists and collectives as part of the ‘Guest Programme,’ thoughtfully curated by Sebastian Cichocki, and includes exciting new artist commissions.

If you haven’t had a chance to explore all the exhibitions yet, we’ve selected a few highlights that are truly worth your visit:

Kasper Bosmans: Hailing from Brussels, Kasper Bosmans, a visual artist, has a captivating presentation at the Limerick City Gallery of Art.

His exhibition comprises a wall mural and a series of paintings on wooden panels, skilfully merging ancient traditions of heraldry and illuminated manuscripts with elements of children’s book illustration and digital logos.

Bosmans’ works delve into the intertwined symbolism of Irish and Flemish folklore.

Frank Sweeney: Based in Dublin, Frank Sweeney, a film and sound artist, is showcasing “Few Can See” at Gardens International (open Wednesday to Sunday with screenings at 12pm, 12.45pm, 1.30pm, 2.15pm and 3pm).

This film critically examines the legacy of broadcast censorship during the Northern Ireland conflict and various political movements of that era.

Sweeney’s project strives to recreate materials that were censored and consequently absent from state archives, relying on contemporary oral history interviews.

The set design and presentation of the work for the 40th EVA International have been developed in collaboration with artist Michelle Malone.

Navine G. Dossos: Residing on the beautiful island of Aegina in Greece, Navine G. Dossos is a visual artist known for her contributions to prestigious institutions such as the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Arts in London.

In Limerick, Navine presents a grand-scale mural, along with paintings and tableware, created in partnership with The Grove Cafe (open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am – 4 pm) on Cecil Street.

Her artwork features motifs and depictions of local foods and their rich histories.

Established by artists in 1977, EVA International stands as one of Ireland’s longest-running visual arts organisations.

The 40th EVA International is proving to be an extraordinary experience, and you can immerse yourself in these exhibitions and more until Sunday, October 29.
