LIMERICK might soon see a new private burial ground developed as part of plans to be submitted to Limerick City and County Council.
Developers intend to develop the cemetery, which would have over 3,000 burial plots, on the site of the pitch and putt course in Monaleen.
The burial ground would be developed over three phases, with 3,335 burial plots in total, as well as Columbarium walls, which are used for the interment of ashes.
Phase one of the development would see 1,048 burial plots created on a 0.6 hectare plot, along with a burial area for ashes on a 0.07 hectare plot, which would feature Columbarium walls.
The second phase would see a further 850 burial plots, with more Columbarium walls integrated into the traditional burial gardens.
The final phase would see the largest number of burial plots created at 1,437.
Again, phase three would see the creation of more Columbarium walls, perhaps in acknowledgement of the increase of people who choose cremation rather than a traditional burial.
The development would also feature new pedestrian walkways, extensive planting, and a meditation garden and reflection pool for people who have loved ones buried in the cemetery.
A single-storey building to include staff welfare area and toilets will also be created, along with 62 car parking spaces and six bicycle stands.
The developer has yet to lodge formal plans to Limerick City and County Council planners, but now has two weeks to do so, following the publication of the planning notice in local media.
