GARDAÍ are hunting for the driver of a stolen car found abandoned in a field after local units pursued it in Kilmallock, County Limerick, overnight on Tuesday (September 12).
The car was reported stolen from Shannon, County Clare, on Tuesday evening and later observed by Kilmallock Gardaí, who attempted to stop the vehicle.
However, the stolen car did not stop for Gardaí and a high-speed chase ensued, according to a local source.
A video of a high-speed pursuit involving Gardaí and the stolen car was shared across social media.
When asked for details of the incident, a Garda spokesman replied: “Gardaí in Limerick recovered a stolen vehicle in the Kilmallock area on Tuesday, 12th September 2023.”
“The car was subject to an unauthorised taking in Shannon, County Clare, earlier that evening.”
“Gardaí observed the vehicle at around 10pm at The Hill in Kilmallock. The vehicle failed to stop for Gardaí and was later found abandoned in a nearby field.”
“No arrests have been made at this time and investigations are ongoing,” the spokesman added.
A source told the Limerick Post: “Last night in Kilmallock there was a massive Garda chase involving a stolen car and several Garda units. The car crashed in Glengrove estate and the occupants fled the scene. There was a massive Garda manhunt all night in Kilmallock.”
A Garda spokesman said Gardaí followed the car for a “short period of time”, but had “no indications” that any collision had occurred.
