SINN Féin Senator Paul Gavan has called for immediate action to regulate CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services) following a report which highlights that Limerick teams are understaffed, consultants are only part-time, staff are burned out, and there is no out-of-hours emergency service.
The report by the Mental Health Commission stated: “There were serious concerns about clinical governance in CHO 3. We were particularly concerned about two CAMHS teams which did not have the capacity to provide a safe mental health service for children”.
Senator Gavan says the report for the CHO 3 area, which includes Limerick, confirms children’s mental health services are inadequate, with two CAMHS Teams deemed unsafe.
“Parents of young people who are in crisis are at their wits end trying to get help,” Senator Gavan said.
