A POPULAR park and playground in Limerick City is set to reopen early next week.
The playground at the People’s Park closed in June to facilitate the installation of new, inclusive playground equipment.
Limerick City and County Council have now confirmed that the upgraded playground will reopen on Monday (September 4).
Earlier in the summer, the Council said that the playground would include fully wheelchair accessible equipment, including a roundabout, a trampoline, and sand digger.
A wide slide on the embankment of the existing park will allow kids and carers to slide together. The swing sets will contain a large bucket-moulded seat and lockable ‘rollercoaster’ style harness, which allows children without the muscular strength and co-ordination to remain upright in a swing seat to enjoy the swinging sensation.
The new park will also feature a sensory area, which will have numerous games panels, musical panels, and a storytelling area.
Reacting to the news of the park’s reopening, Deputy Mayor Dan McSweeney said that the upgrade works were “long overdue.”
“It has been difficult for many families having the playground closed for the summer months but these works have been long overdue,” councillor McSweeney said.
“The delivery of these much needed upgrades would not have been possible only for the elected members of Limerick City coming together to allocate €150,000 from our GMA fund in June 2020.”
“I look forward to the official opening in the coming days and I hope our summer will finally arrive and children will be able to enjoy our new playground well into the autumn,” the Deputy Mayor concluded.
The People’s Park Playground will officially reopen on Monday, September 4, with the official launch taking place at 12 noon.
