New Mungret road network will ease traffic congestion

Limerick Labour Party councillor Joe Leddin.

CONFIRMATION that the first phase of the planned new road network in Mungret will be completed before the end of the year has been welcomed locally.

The first phase of the new road network is currently under construction and will connect from the existing roundabout located beside Atlantic Cabins in Mungret and the Educate Together School to Mungret Gate housing estate. It is expected that this new link road will be substantially completed by November of this year.

Welcoming confirmation of the first phase of the planned new road network, Labour councillor Joe Leddin said it will help ease the traffic volumes currently on the main R510 road by providing residents in the new Mungret Gate housing estate with access directly onto the N69 Dock Road.

“We have seen considerable development in Mungret in recent years with new primary and post primary schools together with hundreds of new houses being built.

“With further development in terms of housing and sporting facilities in planning in Mungret and Ballykeeffe area, traffic congestion has become a daily challenge for many commuters,” Cllr Leddin commented.

The second phase of the new Mungret road network will provide a direct link onto the R526 road to Patrickswell. Once delivered, this new road will provide both residents, businesses, and schools with vital access onto the main Patrickswell road, which will ease traffic congestion in the general Mungret area.

“This project is at the preliminary design stage and preparation for planning. Both schemes are being funded at an approximate cost of €26million by the Department of Housing, National Transport Authority, and Limerick City and County Council.

“The continued development and expansion in Mungret in terms of housing, education, healthcare, and recreational facilities is dependent upon these new link roads, while the provision of active travel schemes and new bus routes will also help towards ensuring the sustainable development takes place,” Cllr Leddin concluded.
